Joyous Material Failure is the debut album by Carbs, the not-folk brotherly duo of Fence Records alumni Jonnie Common and post-op-pop dropout Jamie Scott.

Slouchy beats and sung choruses intersperse with loose-tongued rapping but it's not a hip-hop record. It's not a pop record either. It's the document of an all family collaboration, powered by pizza and a shared will to defamiliarise the process of making music.

Joyous Material Failure is a phrase used by Simon Harlow in a lecture, which sparked the idea for the creative process behind the album. We thank him for this inspiration.

I only picked up on Meursault recently through their brilliant album “I Will Kill Again”. Investigating their back catalogue has been an absolute pleasure. There something about Neil’s outlook and slightly off kilter way of putting songs together that is endlessly compelling. This is illustrated on the track “Simple is Good” with great lyrics “First there was nothing then there was light. Still there was nothing but now we could see it .....” underpinned by appropriately unsettling keyboards. Meursault and Neil Pennycook are national treasures! markrstirling
